Celebrating 15 Years of Empowering Students: BURGER KINGSM Scholars Program Grants More than $2.7 million to Deserving Students in 2015
MECHANICSBURG, PA. – June 2, 2015 – Today, the BURGER KING McLAMORESM Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the BURGER KING® system, announced that 18-year-old Courtney Thurston, from Mechanicsburg, Pa. is one of only three students to receive a $50,000 James W. McLamore WHOPPER® scholarship award. With the help of the Foundation, Thurston now has the opportunity to pursue her dream of attending the honors program at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla. next fall.
The scholarship should have come as no surprise, as out of nearly 1,000 fellow students, Thurston was named Valedictorian for her 2015 high school graduating class at Commonwealth Connections Academy in Harrisburg. Furthermore, she had one of the highest SAT scores in the state of Pennsylvania and also received the prestigious AP Scholar award.
The accomplishments that contributed to this array of awards and honors are nothing short of inspiring. Thurston not only led a team in designing a light sport aircraft for cross-country flight at the Real World Design Challenge, an aerospace engineering competition, but she also was accepted as a summer intern at Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) in Hawthorne, Calif.
Aside from her outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements, Courtney manages to find the time to give back to her community in an exceptional way. This young scholar is the founder of two non-profit-pending organizations. The first, Magikstra, connects students with mentors to help them excel in academia and government. The second, Adopt the Future, helps pair low-income students with corporate and individual sponsors to fund educational expenses throughout their high school careers.
“The James W. Mclamore WHOPPER® Scholarship Award is allowing me to pursue my life dreams,” says Courtney. “This scholarship means the freedom to pursue the amazing opportunities I’m fortunate to have been offered without the stress of paying for an education that I wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford.”
“I’m so proud of the work the Foundation has done in the last 15 years. We aim to build brighter futures around the world, and our scholarship program does just that,” said Jill Granat, president of the BURGER KING McLAMORESM Foundation. “We are honored to carry on James W. McLamore’s vision and to help turn the dreams of some of today’s most exceptional young people into reality.”
Scholarship awards help students offset the cost of attending college or a post-secondary vocational/technical school. Recipients are selected based on their grade point average, extracurricular activities, community service and/or work experience.
