MIAMI – June 3 , 2013 – The BURGER KING McLAMORE SM Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Burger King Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE: BKW) today announced Carson May of Huntsville, AL as one of three students from around the nation to receive the 2013 $50,000 James W. McLamore WHOPPER ™ scholarship award. He will use the award to major in industrial engineering when he attends Auburn University this fall.
Carson is the oldest of four children, and a role model for his two younger brothers, ages 16 and 12, and sister , age 10. An extremely focused and self – motivated young man, Carson’s mother Kelly calls him a “realist,” and someone who, early on, was able to figure out something many adults still struggle with: how to achieve a balance between academics, leadership, community service , athletics and work.
Carson’s achievements represent his philosophy. An Eagle Scout and member of the 2012 Alabama All State Lacrosse Team, Carson was recently chosen as a US Lacrosse Academic All American team – the only student chosen from Alabama an d Mississippi combined. In additi on, Carson was a participant in the Alabama TEAMS science competition, where his team finished first in state for 2013.
Independent and self – assured , Carson believes that the high school experience is also taught outside o f the classroom. “My extracurricular activities, which range from TEAMS science competitions to JROTC raider challenges, have taught me leadership, given me confidence, and shown me the importance of team camaraderie,” says Carson. “There’s something about running up a mountain with a rucksack among nine other guys that gives you a sense of teamwork, the same way puzzling over a cryptic science question with a group of fellow students gives you a feeling of accomplishment” he adds.
